Hakone is famous for its mountains and volcanic landscape. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities including boat cruises, an aerial cableway ride, fishing, golf, and hot springs. It is a popular day trip from Tokyo and a good place for a close-up view of Mt. Fuji. Hakone is located south west of Tokyo, and it is nearly 100 km (65miles) from Tokyo. Hakone is inside the crater formed by the eruptions of the old Hakone volcano about 50,000 years ago. At one part of Hakone, Owakudani, you will see sulfurous white fumes coming from the ground, and you can also see hot springs bubbling on the mountainside. Eggs are boiled in these hot springs which causes them to become black and so they are known as "Hakone Black Eggs". The legend goes that, if you eat one black egg, you will live 7 years longer, and two eggs, another 14 years. Therefore, these black eggs are popular souvenirs to take back home.

Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain (3,776m. or 12,388ft.) in Japan. It is truly beautiful during the winter when the mountain is covered with snow. The view of Mt. Fuji changes depending on your vantage point and time of day while it is cast in different light. This provides many different perspectives of Japan's most famous mountain. Indeed, Mt. Fuji is considered so beautiful, almost holy, that it has been regarded as Japan's most sacred mountain since ancient times. Mt. Fuji's beauty and majesty have been immortalized by poets and artists for centuries.

Hakone Sekisho or Checkpoint
In the Edo period (1603-1867) when Edo (present day Tokyo) was the political center, people had to pass through this Hakone Checkpoint to travel to western or northern parts of Japan. In order to defend Edo, the Shogun's headquarters, the government set up the checkpoint to search travelers. Hakone checkpoint was one of the strictest.

Lake Ashi, where you will enjoy a boat cruise, was created by a volcanic eruption nearly 3000 years ago,It sits at an elevation of 700 meters, 43 meters at its deepest point, 21km in circumference, and its area is 7 km?.
